Overview

Franz Liszt (1811–1886), born in Hungary and active throughout Europe, was a leading composer and pianist of the Romantic era. As a pioneering virtuoso who helped shape the 19th-century concert tradition, he greatly expanded the possibilities of the piano and played an important role in the development of the symphonic poem. His piano music combines dazzling virtuosity with orchestral sonorities, dramatic structures, and poetic character. The Années de pèlerinage, Transcendental Études, and Piano Sonata in B minor are among his best-known works. In his S.558 arrangements of twelve songs by Schubert, Liszt preserves the melodies and emotional substance of the originals while transforming them into richly expressive piano pieces. The religious and introspective qualities of his late works also influenced later composers.
