This work is Liszt’s transcription for solo piano of music from the opera Lohengrin, centered on the long-breathed melody expressing Elsa’s dream. The principal melody begins quietly and gradually expands in range and sonority as the harmony shifts, moving from inward lyricism toward a broad climax. The roles of melody and accompaniment should remain clearly balanced, with a vocal sense of breathing in the singing quality of the right hand. The pedal should support the resonance without blurring it; at the climax, shaping not only the volume but also the fullness and direction of the sound brings out the dreamlike atmosphere and dramatic breadth.
