This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of the hymn to the evening star from Wagner’s opera. Centered on a vocal-like melody, it combines chordal accompaniment with the rich textures of the piano, moving from passages suggestive of quiet prayer toward fuller sonorities. It is important to preserve the natural breath of the melody while supporting it without allowing the inner voices to become buried. Pedaling should sustain the resonance without creating blurring; carefully shaping the phrase peaks and lingering aftersounds brings out the dialogue between song and accompaniment, as well as the breadth of Liszt’s arrangement.
