This work is Liszt’s transcription for solo piano of a song from Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. While preserving the original’s long-breathed melody and gentle emotional character, it adds the harmonic richness and expanded register possible on the piano. The singing main line should be brought forward while the inner voices and accompaniment are shaped with a gentle touch. The transitions from the presentation of the melody to passages of fuller sonority deserve careful attention. Rather than exaggerating dynamics abruptly, phrasing that follows the sense of breath allows the music’s flow and the artistry of the transcription to emerge from its quiet atmosphere.
