Scriabin’s “Poème” is an introspective, dreamlike miniature in which melodic contours and harmonic color seem to merge. One of its chief attractions lies in the way short phrases unfold as if breathing, while changes of register and texture continually transform the expression. In performance, the melody should be allowed to emerge while the accompaniment remains delicate, and the pedal must be used carefully so that the resonance does not become blurred.
