This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of Schubert’s song “Kriegers Ahnung” (“Warrior’s Foreboding”). Centered on a vocal-like melody, it alternates tense accompaniment with powerful sonorities, portraying both quiet inwardness and dramatic intensification. A key point is the contrast between passages in which the melody comes to the foreground and those in which the accompaniment drives the music forward. In performance, the melody should be allowed to sing while the inner voices and accompaniment remain clearly balanced, and dynamic changes should be shaped as part of a broad musical arc. The pedal should be used carefully to sustain resonance without obscuring the contours of the rhythm.
