As the third piece in the set, this work combines the simplicity of a melody suggestive of Ukrainian folk song with Liszt’s characteristic piano writing. Centered on a singing principal line, it gains expressive shading through the movement of the accompaniment and changes in harmony. Careful attention should be given to the exchange of melodic material and to the breathing of each phrase, while ornaments should be played lightly enough not to interrupt the flow. Even in louder passages, maintaining the resonance without relying on force and keeping the inner voices clear will bring out both the music’s plainspoken lyricism and its delicate feeling.
