Valse mélancolique is a miniature built on the gently swaying triple meter of the waltz, inviting the listener to savor its singing melody and shaded harmonies. The light character of a dance alternates with expressions tinged with hesitation and melancholy, with notable moments in the progression from the presentation of the melody through changes of character and back to the flow of the dance. In performance, the left-hand accompaniment should remain restrained and even, while the right-hand melody should emerge through a soft legato. Avoiding a hurried tempo and allowing the resonance created between rests and phrases brings out the delicate poetic feeling and supple movement of the waltz.
