Franz Liszt ： Grande Fantaisie symphonique on Themes from Berlioz’s Lélio S.120

This early concertante work by Liszt takes themes from Berlioz’s dramatic work Lélio and develops them through a dialogue between solo piano and orchestra. Within a free fantasia-like structure, singing melodies, dramatically charged episodes, and brilliant virtuosity appear in succession, while the character of the themes changes in varied ways. Highlights include passages where the piano’s dazzling writing intersects with the orchestra’s color, as well as the broad flow that connects the work as a whole.
