This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of Schubert’s song “Ihr Bild.” Centering on the original vocal melody, it transfers the movement of the accompaniment and the harmony into the sonority of the piano, evoking quiet recollection and inner tension. The piece follows the flow of the song, moving from the presentation and development of the melody through a deepening of expression to its conclusion. Highlights include the shading created by the singing melody and layered accompaniment, as well as the subtle fluctuation produced by harmonic changes. In performance, the melody should always be brought clearly to the foreground while the inner voices and accompaniment remain restrained. Careful attention to the breathing of each phrase, with moderate use of rubato and pedal, allows the resonance of the sound to support the emotion.
