This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a Schubert song, centered on a familiar vocal melody and a light, flowing accompaniment. The melody returns repeatedly, colored by the expanded range and embellishments made possible by the piano, while the contrast between melody and accompaniment provides an important point of interest. In performance, the principal melody should remain clearly projected, with the inner voices and accompaniment kept in balance. Preserving the natural breathing of each phrase and using the pedal carefully, without clouding the sound, helps combine the song-like flow with the brilliance of the arrangement.
