Franz Liszt ： 2 Pieces from “Lohengrin” (Wagner) S.446/R.279 – 3. Lohengrin’s Reproach h-moll

This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of music from Wagner’s opera associated with Lohengrin’s reproach. Within the dramatic tension and sombre colouring of B minor, the vocal character of the original melody is portrayed through weighty chords and resonant bass lines. The passages in which the melody comes to the fore are especially compelling, calling for natural, speech-like phrasing and a lyrical quality. The music benefits from clearly shaped contrasts while carefully conveying both emotional intensification and quiet afterglow. It is also important to clarify the accompaniment figures and inner voices, maintaining a balance that allows the principal melody to remain prominent.
