This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of “Wasserflut,” the sixth song from Schubert’s Winterreise. Long-breathed phrases suggesting the vocal melody and a flowing accompaniment evoke the poetic imagery of tears and melting snow. The melody emerges by passing between the middle and upper registers, while its overlap with the accompaniment gradually deepens the emotional expression. Highlights include the contrast between the singing line and the accompaniment’s delicate motion, as well as the emotional intensification toward the end. In performance, the melody should be brought clearly to the fore while the accompaniment remains flexible rather than mechanical, with phrasing that conveys a sense of breath. Pedaling should support the resonance without blurring the outlines of the individual voices.
