This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of three melodies drawn from Schubert’s Divertissement à l’hongroise. Its character is shaped by the lyrical quality of the approachable melodies and the lively rhythmic energy associated with Hungarian style, allowing the distinct character of each of the three pieces to be appreciated. Passages that present the original material clearly alternate with brilliant writing that makes use of an expanded register and embellishments, creating vivid contrasts throughout the music. In performance, it is important to keep the melody from being obscured and to balance it carefully against the accompaniment. Maintain a buoyant rhythm without making it heavy, allow room for ornamental notes and rapid details, and give each piece its own expressive character.
