This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of the “Liebestod” from the final act of Wagner’s music drama Tristan und Isolde. It conveys the original’s long-breathed melody and intense harmonic tension through overlapping voices and a wide register, building a broad arc from a quiet opening to an ecstatic climax. The melody should be made to sing while the movement of the inner voices remains audible, and the pedal should be carefully controlled so that the sonority does not become blurred. Preserving the breathing of each phrase, allowing the dynamic expansion to unfold patiently, and sustaining the sense of release after the climax will bring out its dramatic intensity.
