This is one of Liszt’s arrangements of Bach’s organ works for piano, in which the Prelude and Fugue retain their distinct characters while forming a tightly connected progression. The Prelude presents weighty harmonic movement and a broad conception, while in the Fugue the subject is passed from voice to voice, gradually increasing the density of the texture. In performance, it is important to bring out each vocal line clearly, distinguish the inner voices from the bass, and use piano touch and pedaling to create an expansive sonority suggestive of the organ. Rather than relying on sheer power, maintaining rhythmic momentum and harmonic tension allows the work’s large-scale structure to emerge.
