This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a romance taken from an opera by Spohr. A songful melody remains at the center, while the accompanying chords and delicate movement of the inner parts support its expressive character. Listening closely to the progression from the presentation of the melody toward passages of changing intensity and tension reveals both the vocal appeal of the original and the breadth of sonority available on the piano. In performance, the melody in the right hand should be brought out clearly while the left hand remains gentle. Pedaling should follow the harmonic changes without clouding the sound, and the accompaniment should be kept light enough not to obscure the melody, bringing out the work’s serene feeling and subtle shading.
