This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a Schubert song. The ceaselessly moving figuration in both hands evokes the turning of a spinning wheel, while the vocal melody rises to the surface of the keyboard texture, portraying Gretchen’s shifting emotions through repetition and intensification. The music should move forward without losing its momentum from the opening; as the tension reaches its peaks, the expansion of register and dynamics can be brought out, while the changing sections should carefully convey the movement of her inner feelings. Rather than keeping the accompanying figures mechanically even, use the pedal flexibly in response to the melody’s breathing and the changing harmony, while maintaining a clear balance between the voices.
