Franz Liszt ： Winterreise (Schubert) S.561 R.246 – Die Post

This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of Schubert’s song “Die Post.” Centered on the original’s familiar, lively melody, it expands the accompaniment and harmonic range, transforming the breath of the song into the piano’s varied sonorities. Its overall buoyant momentum, along with the exchange of melodic lines and changes of atmosphere, provides much to appreciate. In performance, the principal melody should be brought clearly to the fore, while the inner voices and accompaniment remain light and well balanced. Avoid being carried away by the small notes; instead, preserve the direction of each phrase and the changing dynamics, allowing a natural, song-like lyricism to emerge within the brilliance.
