This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of the march from Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila. Built on the clear rhythm and powerful forward drive characteristic of a march, it recreates the brilliance of the original on the keyboard. As the themes are presented and developed, the range and volume expand, allowing grandeur and vitality to alternate throughout the piece. In performance, it is important to maintain a clear sense of meter while keeping the inner voices from being buried. In thick chords and passages spanning a wide register, using the weight of the arms to produce a resonant yet relaxed sound, while following the direction of each voice, helps balance the march’s strength with its brilliant color.
