This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a march and a cavatina from Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor. In the opening march, a clearly defined rhythm suggesting a steady procession and a brilliant sonority provide the main attraction, while the cavatina that follows offers a contrast through its singing melody and delicate accompaniment. In the march, it is important to maintain a firm sense of meter without making the texture too heavy. In the cavatina, the melody should remain fully cantabile, with the inner voices and ornaments carefully balanced to create an expressive performance.
