This fantasia is Liszt’s reworking for solo piano of themes from Wagner’s opera Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes. Centered on the opera’s powerful and dramatic melodies, it alternates between the presentation and transformation of the themes and brilliant virtuoso passages, creating a sense of theatrical exaltation. Highlights include the climactic passages shaped by sonorous chords and a wide range, as well as moments when the melody rises clearly above the texture. In performance, it is important not to rush through the technical writing, but to distinguish the character of each theme. Balancing the accompaniment and clarifying the roles of the singing melody and ornate decoration will make the dramatic flow easier to convey.
