A fantasia in which Liszt extensively develops material from Rossini’s song collection Soirées musicales for solo piano. While preserving the lyrical quality of the familiar melodies, he transforms them into brilliant concert writing through ornamentation, expanded registers, and dazzling passagework. Rather than simply repeating a single theme, the work can be heard as a progression from the presentation of melodic material to variation-like treatment and virtuosic development. Highlights include the contrast between singing phrases and lively motion, moments in which the melody rises above the accompaniment, and the increasing brilliance toward the close. In performance, the melody’s breathing and rhetorical character should remain clear; the smaller notes should not be rushed, and the layers of tone and sense of structure should be maintained within the virtuosity.
