Franz Liszt ： Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg (Wagner) Es-Dur S.442/R.275

This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of the overture to Wagner’s opera. It opens with a solemn, chorale-like theme, then moves into more sensuous and animated music, creating a contrast between sections of differing character. The opening theme eventually returns and leads the work toward a grand climax. In performance, it is important to suggest the fullness of an orchestra while clearly differentiating the principal melody from the inner voices. The pedal should enrich the sound without clouding it, allowing the tension and release of each section to emerge and conveying the work’s expansive structure.
