Franz Liszt ： Idée fixe (Berlioz) S.395

This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a melody by Berlioz. As the title Andante amoroso suggests, it centers on a gentle, intimate mood and a singing melodic line. Built around the presentation of the melody, it gains variety through changes in the accompaniment figures and expansion of the register, allowing the expression of the original to be experienced through the layered sonorities of the piano. In performance, the melody should be brought clearly to the fore while the inner voices and accompaniment remain restrained, preserving the long, flowing phrases and natural breathing. Unhurried dynamic transitions and delicate pedaling can further enhance its tender atmosphere.
