Grounded in the dance character of the mazurka, this work brings together improvisatory freedom and delicate lyricism. Lightly buoyant rhythms alternate with shaded melodic lines and subtle harmonic shifts, creating a fluid sense of motion. Particular attention should be paid to the contrast between passages in which the melody is allowed to sing and those in which the rhythm comes to the fore. In performance, it is important to preserve the pulse’s underlying weight while using rubato without becoming mechanical, to keep the inner voices audible, and to avoid blurring the sonority with excessive pedal.
