The first of two threnodies dedicated to the cypresses of the Villa d’Este in the third year of Années de pèlerinage. The sonority of weighty, darkened chords and long-breathed melodies shapes an atmosphere of quiet mourning. Listen to the progression from the solemn opening, through passages in which the melody comes to the fore and a middle section of heightened tension, before the music returns to a more introspective mood. In performance, it is important to preserve the weight of the chords without allowing the sound to become blurred, and not to overstate the melodic peaks. The pedal should support the resonance while being used carefully so that the movement of the voices remains clear, allowing the breathing and deep shadows within the stillness to emerge.
