Franz Liszt ： Muellergesaenge (Schubert) S.565 R.249 – Das Wandern

This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of a song by Schubert, centered on a lively rhythm suggestive of walking and a familiar, flowing melody. The roles of melody and accompaniment are passed between the piano’s registers, preserving the sense of repeated stanzas while adding the colors of a solo work through a wider range and richer sonority. The melody should emerge naturally as a song, while the accompaniment maintains a light, flowing motion. Keeping a steady sense of pulse and allowing a measured resonance at the ends of phrases brings out both the exhilaration of travel and the music’s simple intimacy.
