This work is Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano of Schubert’s song “Abschied.” Centering on the vocal melody, it combines the accompaniment’s movement and inner voices on a single piano, preserving the approachable flow of the original while expanding its range and sonority. A key concern is to clarify the roles of melody and accompaniment and let the melody sing with natural phrasing. Repeated phrases invite subtle changes of expression, while the dynamic balance should prevent the finer movements from covering the melody. As the music moves toward its conclusion, maintaining the resonance while calmly shaping the flow allows the feeling of farewell to emerge.
