Overview

Béla Bartók (1881–1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist who played a central role in shaping 20th-century modern music. Together with Kodály and others, he collected and analyzed folk songs from Hungary and across Eastern Europe, incorporating their melodies, distinctive accents, irregular meters, and ancient modes into his musical language. His works combine sharply defined rhythms, a percussive piano style, and highly detailed structures with the directness of folk music and the vitality of dance. Among his best-known piano works are Mikrokosmos, an educational collection of considerable musical depth; the powerful Allegro barbaro; the Piano Sonata; and the 10 Easy Piano Pieces. Bartók’s distinctive approach, which closely connected ethnomusicological research with composition, exerted a lasting influence on later composers and performers.
