Overview

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924) was an Italian pianist, composer, and teacher who worked across Europe. A major keyboard musician of the period, he stood at the transition from late Romanticism to the modern music of the twentieth century, combining exceptional virtuosity with an expansive sense of musical form. He is particularly known for his arrangements and editions of J. S. Bach, above all the piano arrangement of the Chaconne, which joins the contrapuntal density of the original with the sonority of the piano. In his own music, Busoni extended traditional forms and classical counterpoint while pursuing rich harmonies, wide registers, and complex structures. His piano works, including the Elegies, the series An die Jugend, and the Fantasia contrappuntistica, reflect both his experience as a performer and his innovative ideas about the future of music.
