This work is Busoni’s transcription of Schönberg’s Piano Piece No. 2. Within sonorities that do not rely on a sense of tonality, short motifs, blocks of chords, and sharply defined rests intersect. Tension is sustained quietly, while changes in sound density and resonance bring shifting shades of expression. Rather than pursuing a clear lyrical melody, the listener should attend to changes in tone color and musical gesture. Performers should differentiate the character of each fragment and convey the contrasts in dynamics without exaggerating them. Pedaling should be carefully controlled to prevent the resonance from becoming blurred, while silences should be preserved as part of the music and the balance of inner voices and chords shaped with care.
