Taking the marsh warbler’s song as its point of departure, the piece uses finely detailed movements, sharp accents, and sudden pauses to evoke the bird’s presence and the surrounding space on the piano. Rather than proceeding within a clearly defined meter, fragmentary gestures follow one another while the register, tone color, and density of resonance continually change. In performance, it is important not to make the quick movements overly mechanical, but to remain aware of the direction and breathing of each phrase. The pedal should enrich the resonance without blurring the contours, while pauses and lingering sounds should be carefully preserved as part of the music, allowing the vitality and natural fluctuation of the bird’s song to emerge.
