Ferruccio Busoni ： Chorale Prelude and Fugue on a Fragment by Bach Kind.256a

Based on a fragment by Bach, this work presents a contrast between the character of a chorale prelude and that of a fugue. In the prelude, the overlapping harmonies and long-breathed phrases should be shaped with care; in the fugue, the interplay of voices should be made clear as the subject passes from one part to another. Throughout, the independence of each voice and the balance of the overall sonority are essential. Use the pedal with restraint to avoid blurring the texture, while preserving the direction of the melodic lines. Bringing out a natural singing quality within the strictness of the writing allows the appeal of the structure to emerge.
