The fifteenth piece in Busoni’s set of 24 preludes, this work invites the pianist to let the melody sing within a gentle flow while carefully appreciating the shifting harmony and movement of the inner voices. Its compact design allows changes in the placement of melody and accompaniment to give the same material varied expressions. Particularly rewarding are the subtle exchanges between the outer voices and inner parts, as well as the natural tension leading toward the ends of phrases. In performance, keep the right-hand melody supple, shape the accompaniment discreetly, and avoid clouding the texture with the pedal. Rather than treating the meter mechanically, support the musical flow with rubato that reflects a sense of breath.
