Lyadov’s Barcarolle is a lyrical miniature in which a long-breathed melody seems to float above a gently rocking accompaniment. A steady rhythm suggesting the motion of a boat supports the piece as a whole, while changes in the melody’s expression and register create a natural sense of ebb and flow. In the calmer passages, it is important to keep the sonority clear and let the melody sing softly.
