Overview
Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov (1855–1914) was a Russian composer, conductor, and music educator. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and later taught there, combining the traditions of the Russian national school with the refined musical language of the late nineteenth century. Although he wrote relatively few large-scale works, he developed a distinctive voice in carefully crafted miniatures. The fantastical and mysterious colors, finely nuanced harmony, and concise formal designs found in orchestral works such as The Music Box, Baba-Yaga, and The Enchanted Lake are central to his musical style. His piano music consists mainly of preludes, intermezzi, bagatelles, and fugues, in which he explores delicate sonorities and poetic expression. Works such as the 12 Canons on a Cantus Firmus, the 2 Bagatelles, Op. 17, the 2 Fugues, Op. 41, and the 2 Intermezzi, Opp. 7 and 8, also reveal his interest in counterpoint and his ability to concentrate a carefully finished musical idea within a small-scale form.
