The first piece in Lyadov’s set of Three Canons, this work places the imitation of voices in canon at the heart of its musical design. A following voice pursues the preceding melody, allowing short ideas to overlap and unfold while inviting the listener to appreciate both the movement of each part and the harmony of the whole. In performance, it is important to make the transfer of the melody clear and to balance touch and dynamics so that no voice is obscured. Natural phrasing should prevent the music from sounding mechanical, while careful attention to the entries and changing overlaps of the imitative lines brings out the interest of its structure.
