This short piece is the second work in Lyadov’s Two Mazurkas. It is shaped by the gentle sway of the mazurka’s triple meter and the light, dance-like emphasis of its rhythms, while offering subtle changes of expression within a compact span. Listen for the contrast between passages in which the melody is allowed to sing and those in which the rhythmic lift comes to the fore. In performance, avoid making the beat overly mechanical; instead, remain attentive to the placement of accents and the space around rests to preserve a natural dance-like breath. Keep the left-hand accompaniment from becoming too heavy, and bring out the melody and ornaments in the right hand clearly to reveal the piece’s delicate charm.
