This is the first piece in Lyadov’s *2 Fugues*, in which several voices develop by passing a single subject from one to another. Centered on the subject’s presentation and its answering entries in the different voices, the music shifts in density and tension as the lines overlap. A key point to hear is the way the subject takes on changing shades each time it appears in another voice while remaining integrated into the overall flow. In performance, it is important to clarify the subject’s outline and the independence of each voice, maintaining a balance that keeps the inner parts from being obscured. Rather than relying too heavily on the pedal, use clear articulation and carefully judged space to organize the intertwining lines. Even where the tension increases, avoid rushing and preserve the direction of each voice to achieve a poised, transparent sonority.
