Overview

Enrique Granados y Campiña (1867–1916) was a Spanish composer and pianist who connected the expressive lyricism of Romanticism with distinctly Spanish musical language. Drawing on Catalan culture, folk-like melodies, and dance rhythms, he developed a piano style that combines delicate singing lines with brilliant, highly colored textures. His best-known piano work, Goyescas, was inspired by the world of Francisco de Goya and evokes Spain at the turn of the nineteenth century. Other important works, including the Spanish Dances and Valses poéticos, reveal his characteristic blend of passionate rhythm, refined lyricism, and vivid sonority. His early Album de Melodias Paris 1888 contains approachable and melodic miniatures such as “Allegretto,” “Andante,” “At the Seashore,” and “Chatter.” Granados occupies an important place in the development of Spanish national music, while his music also retains the intimacy and expressive freedom of late Romantic piano writing. He died in 1916 while returning to Europe from the United States.
