Enrique Granados ： Goyescas Part 1 Lament or The Maiden and the Nightingale

The fourth piece of Part 1 of Granados’s Goyescas is a lyrical miniature steeped in deep lament and the stillness of night. A songful main melody is interwoven with ornaments and delicate passagework, gradually moving from a subdued mood toward mounting passion. In the middle section, changes in register and sonority add color, while near the end, brilliant figures emerge that suggest the song of a nightingale. The melody should always remain prominent, with the inner voices and accompaniment carefully kept in the background. Use rubato in accordance with the musical breathing, avoid rushing the ornaments, and shape the contrast between stillness and passion with care to bring out the work’s poetic character.
