“Melancólica” is an introspective and highly lyrical miniature from the Spanish Dances. A singing melody remains at the center, while delicate shades and a subtle sense of fluctuation emerge within its quiet expression. One of its attractions is the contrast between the presentation of the melody and the passages where the sonority and movement undergo subtle changes. In performance, the right-hand melody should remain smooth, while the inner voices and accompaniment are kept restrained and carefully balanced. Shaping the breath of each phrase is essential. Rather than dramatizing the emotion excessively, a measured use of rubato can bring out the melancholy naturally.
