Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a leading composer of the Baroque era, active primarily in Germany. He wrote in a wide range of genres, from church music and concertos to chamber and keyboard works, combining intricate contrapuntal writing with rich harmony and clear rhythmic organization. The independent yet closely connected movement of individual voices is one of the defining features of his music. Among his best-known keyboard works are The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Goldberg Variations, and the Inventions and Sinfonias; these works are now central to the piano repertoire, although they were originally written for keyboard instruments more broadly.
