This work consists of a prelude and fugue and stands among the final pieces in Book II of The Well-Tempered Clavier. In the prelude, the lines must be handed carefully from one voice to another while maintaining a continuous flow; the changing sonorities and expressive inner voices are especially rewarding to hear. In the fugue that follows, the subject appears successively in different voices, and the music unfolds through tightly woven counterpoint. It is important to distinguish each voice clearly while shaping the whole as one sustained arc. Rather than rushing through ornaments or smaller figures, attention to the grouping of beats and balance between the voices helps produce a three-dimensional performance full of tension.
