This work consists of a prelude and fugue and stands among the closing pieces of Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier. In the prelude, listen for the shifting melodies passed between the voices and the changing harmonies within its measured flow. The five-voice fugue that follows grows denser as the subject appears in each voice and the lines intertwine. It is important to keep each voice independent and expressive while carefully bringing out the movement of the inner parts and the tension between the voices. Ornaments should be shaped without disturbing the flow, with a clear sense of the metrical framework. A calm, unhurried approach allows the contrapuntal tension and profound expression to emerge.
