Overview

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was a leading Russian composer of the Romantic era. Drawing on Western musical forms while incorporating distinctly Russian melodic character and refined emotional expression, he wrote across a wide range of genres, including symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music, songs, and piano works. His music is marked by rich, memorable melodies and dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. Among his best-known works are the ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, Symphony No. 6, Pathétique, and Piano Concerto No. 1. His piano music includes the accessible collection 12 Pieces of Moderate Difficulty, whose miniatures—such as Sad Song, Broken Dream, In the Country, and Russian Dance—show his lyrical gift and his feeling for dance rhythms.
