Tchaikovsky’s “Meditation” is a piano miniature with a calm, spacious flow that invites the listener to savor its songful melody. The principal melody unfolds gradually over a supporting accompaniment, while changes in sonority and dynamics guide the music from a gentle mood toward passages of greater inner tension. A central point of interest is the way each phrase is given its own character while the overall continuity is preserved. In performance, the right-hand melody should be allowed to sing clearly, while the left-hand accompaniment remains restrained; it is also important to shape the breathing of each phrase naturally toward its points of arrival. The pedal should be changed in accordance with the harmonic movement so that the sonority remains clear.
