This widely loved waltz comes from Tchaikovsky’s suite The Nutcracker, based on his ballet music. Following the introduction, an elegant triple-meter main section unfolds, with flowing melodies and dance-like accompaniment carrying the music forward. A contrasting middle passage brings changes in expression and motion before the atmosphere of the main section returns and the piece closes brilliantly. On the piano, it is important to let the melody sing while keeping the accompaniment’s pulse light and graceful. Careful attention to the exchange between voices, as well as to the gradual shaping of dynamics and breadth, brings out both the waltz’s elegance and its festive radiance.
