“October: Autumn Song,” the tenth piece in The Seasons, is a miniature filled with profound melancholy and quiet introspection. Supported by a gently paced accompaniment, its long-breathed melody unfolds in a singing manner. The calm character of the opening gradually takes on different shades as the phrases develop, then returns to the mood of the main theme after a contrasting section. It is important to keep the roles of melody and accompaniment clear: let the right hand sing fully, while the left hand supports it with a softness that never interrupts the flow. Use the pedal in accordance with the harmonic changes so that the sound does not become blurred, and carefully convey the stillness of autumn and its shifting emotions through the rests and lingering resonance of the notes.
